ND8 grey filters from Rollei are made from multiple scratch-resistant, dirt and water-repellent coated, color-neutral and titanium-mounted Gorilla Glass. Long exposures, e.g. when photographing the starry sky or for wind effect shots of the cloudy sky, require special equipment:
A stable and robust outdoor tripod, a remote shutter release and a so-called ND filter, such as this ND8 gray filter for Lens, also called a gray filter or neutral density filter because of the homogeneous neutral gray tint of the filter glass. Grey filters expand the camera's exposure possibilities by reducing the amount of light hitting the sensor without affecting color and contrast.
Grey filters are indispensable, especially for the traveling light effect at night, as well as for long exposures during the day, e.g. for better cropping of objects and for photography of moving surfaces and objects such as flowing water or road traffic. They enable longer exposure times, as the uniformly dark/grey and color-neutral lens allows less light to fall on the image sensors.
ND8 stands for a grey filter, which extends the exposure time by three f-stops. It therefore has an optical density / strength of 0.9.
The Rollei Extremium ND8 filter extends the available exposure times by a whole three f-stops. The evenly darkened gray disk of an ND filter reduces the incidence of light and thus extends the shutter speed for smooth movements. The absolutely color-neutral grey coloration of the glass pane also prevents color shifts, even during exposure. All our neutral density filters (gray filters) are round screw-in filters. This production method is cheaper, saves space and is considerably lighter than plug-in filters.
ND8grey filter with Gorilla® glass - extreme materials for extreme tasks
The Extremium ND8 grey filter from Rollei is made of particularly resistant, multi-coated and darkened Gorilla® glass and a temperature-resistant titanium mount. This unique surface coating of the glass withstands even the most adverse environmental influences such as scratches, impacts and permanent material contact. The special glass from the traditional US manufacturer from Corning, New York, is given a special coating - the glass blanks have to withstand a long period in a hot alkaline solution - and therefore have an enormously increased surface tension. This preserves excellent light transmission and prevents optical distortion. The temperature-resistant titanium ring ensures that the filter glass of our round ND filters is not exposed to pressure and shear forces and can be easily removed from the Lens even after demanding shoots in the great outdoors and in bad weather. The Luminance Coating provides an additional coating for the outstanding filter glass and noticeably improves the mechanical resistance while maintaining freedom from distortion and the highest possible color neutrality (color fidelity). This is because even the slightest shifts in color values at the shooting location have negative effects on all subsequent processing steps. At the same time, reflections are reduced to a very low level with our gray filters.
Engineered + Quality Controlled in Germany - Rollei QM strategy
Constant focus on the highest quality - Rollei has developed its own QM strategy in order to be able to continuously monitor and ensure the extreme quality standards of the current camera filter series. As part of the "Engineered + Quality Controlled in Germany" initiative, processes and guidelines have been defined that go far beyond the methods and specifications customary in the industry. Inspections according to the internationally proven and merciless AQL standard (Accepted Quality Limit) access the production batches several times in succession and immediately sort out even the smallest complaints
