"Up close" - These are the best photos

Results of the photo competition

On the occasion of the new Schnappschuss-Issue, we launched this exciting photo competition in advance and wanted to tie in with the theme of this year's "Close" magazine, which was published in mid-May to coincide with the D?sseldorf Fototage.
We took a completely unbiased approach and left the photographers a very nice and wide field with many possibilities, because "Close" or "Up close" does not always have to be macro photography.
We were more than overwhelmed by the great response. Over 2,700 photos were submitted by 999 participants, so the jury was ultimately spoiled for choice when it came to selecting the five best photos. The different approaches to this topic did not make the decision any easier. In addition to impressive macro shots, the proximity to a lioness is frightening or the intimacy of an astrophile who wants to be as close as possible to the starry sky is fascinating.

Up close photo competition 1st place Heiko Dworak

1st place:

Things got heated during the evaluation. As usual, the conference was characterized by long discussions, differences of opinion and, in the end, very satisfied jurors. The best picture came from Lars Herrmann from Striegistal between Chemnitz and Dresden. The photo was also taken in this area, where an old clay pit has become a perfect natural biotope over time.
You first have to find a "dragonfly like this", he says confidently when we inform him of his win. Herrmann explains to us that this is not just an ordinary macro shot of a dragonfly, but that the photo is a composition of six different focal planes, which were finally combined into one plane.

Photo competition Up close 2nd place Klaus-Peter Selzer

2nd place:

Second place went to Klaus-Peter Selzer from Dillingen. He wrote to us afterwards that the picture was taken as part of a photo series at Amneville Zoo in France. He wanted to capture the different facial expressions of the animals. Selzer used his Wide-angle lens very close to the lioness, where he was immediately greeted with a growl and a fierce look. But he didn't hesitate for long and pressed the shutter release. The adrenaline was worth it, not just for a great photo, but also for second place in our photo competition.

3rd place:

Matt Aust manages to bring the distance very close to us with his photo. He transports us to the Austrian mountains with his fascinating astrophotography. His image is a panorama of four shots taken with a modified Sony A7s and an 18mm f2.8 Zeiss Batis Lens for astrophotography. The photo was taken on the 2828m high Pirchkogel mountain in Austria. At the beginning of November last year, he made a tour there and finally reached the summit after a good four hours of climbing. In the photo you can see the striking constellation Orion and the lower reaches of the Winter Milky Way. Thin veil clouds made for huge-looking stars, but also more visible star colors due to the magnification, he tells us.
After photographing for a few hours in double-digit temperatures below zero, he spent the rest of the night in his tent and returned to the valley the next day. This great effort was rewarded with a beautiful shot and third place in our photo competition.

4th place:

It gets hot in 4th place! As the person responsible for public relations at the Schallstadt volunteer fire department, Andreas Berger is always up close when things get hot. The photo was taken from a short distance with a wide-angle lens during a fire drill. Berger reports that it was very dark and the floodlights had not yet been set up. But he pressed the shutter release on his camera at the right moment and used the light from the fire to create the perfect atmosphere for this great photo.

5th place:

We are delighted for Regina K?hl, who showed us an unusual macro photo with her photo of a dandelion. She not only photographed a flower, but also sprayed the individual flags with blue ink. A well-deserved fifth place goes to this modern yet minimalist macro shot. We were particularly pleased to hear that she enjoys trying out different areas of photography. Her motivation is worthy of all honors!

Unfortunately, only the first five places could be honored, but there were countless other pictures that just didn't make it onto the "podium". We admire the high quality of all the entries and look forward to all participants taking part in the next photo competitions
