Fujifilm X-H1 in test

We took the new Fujifilm X-H1 on a short Easter photo tour through Rothenburg ob der Tauber in April. In this article you will find the resulting video and our first impressions of the sensor stabilization.

The X-H1 differs from previous Fujifilm system cameras in many ways. The most important innovation is the sensor stabilization and the associated housing enlargement. The X-H1 is even more robust than the X-T2 thanks to its reinforced magnesium alloy body. The larger design offers plenty of space for the mechanical sensor stabilization, which worked very well in our test. (similar to the Olympus sensor stabilization) Many DSLR photographers have complained about the feel of system cameras, as their compactness means they do not fit as well in large hands as a full-frame SLR camera. This is why the new X-H1 has been given a pronounced grip area, which allows the camera to be held more securely in the hand. This has also created space on the top for a shoulder display, which allows the most important settings to be read more quickly.

Video functions of the X-H1

ETERNA film simulation: The new ETERNA color profile has been specially added for video recording and offers a lot of creative freedom for post-production. Video quality: The X-H1 enables Cinema 4K recording in 17:9 format (DCI 4K recording 4,096 x 2,160, 24p) and smooth slow-motion recordings in FUll-HD at up to 120 frames per second. Record at a high bit rate of 200 Mbps. F-Log and timecode: The X-H1 supports F-Log and timecode recording, as well as 4K F-Log recording, directly to SD card and does not require an external recorder.

Fujifilm X-H2 body - successor to the X-H1

  • High-resolution 40.2 megapixel X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor
  • X-Processor 5
  • Intelligent autofocus
  • Integrated image stabilizer (IBIS)
  • Shutter speed of up to 1/180,000 sec (in electronic shutter)
  • 8K video resolution with up to 30fps in 4:2:2 10-bit format
  • Slow-motion video recording with up to 240fps (with FullHD)
  • Up to 160 megapixel RAWs using Pixel Shift Multi-Shot

Our conclusion:

With the X-H1, Fujifilm has brought a system camera onto the market that delivers outstanding photos and is also aimed at filmmakers for the first time. In combination with the battery grip, there is even a headphone output on board to listen to the live sound and adjust it if necessary. Full HD video recording at 120 frames per second, in conjunction with sensor stabilization, makes it possible to film from the hand. The autofocus works much better with the new lenses (23, 35, 50mm; F2) than with the older, aperture lenses. Those who primarily want to create videos should therefore choose a lens from a new series and may have to do without an aperture of F1.4. The ETERNA color profile is a pleasant color profile to work with, which also offers beginners good editing options and is easy to use. There are certainly colour profiles that offer even more leeway, but these are not very helpful for video beginners and intermediates. Although Fujifilm's X-H1 has taken another step towards a larger camera, this change is due to the sensor stabilization, which is definitely an enrichment. The image stabilizer is not only really practical for videos, but also for photos. We were able to take hand-held photos with the 56mm lens at a shutter speed of 1/2 second without blurring. It often takes several attempts and calm breathing, but the result speaks for itself! Download test photo We think that the X-H1 is more than successful. It is ideal for demanding photographers who are looking for top image quality in a compact body and anyone who is starting to enjoy filming.
