1. The highest image quality of all LUMIX cameras
With the LUMIX G9, Panasonic further improves on the outstanding image quality of the LUMIX GH5. As a result, the new top model achieves the best image quality of all LUMIX G DSLM cameras to date. The 20.3-megapixel Digital Live MOS Sensor with no low-pass filter brings out the best in the performance of the Lenses. The Venus Engine image processor, with its multipixel luminance analysis and intelligent detail processing, delivers equally detailed, differentiated and natural images. An optimal gradation setting, matched to the characteristics of the sensor, ensures a wider dynamic range with uniform gradation. The sensor's anti-reflective coating also minimizes ghosting and reflections.
Three-dimensional color analysis detects not only hue and saturation, but also brightness. In this way, the LUMIX G9 ensures optimum color reproduction with high saturation in both dark and bright areas of the image. In particular, this improves the definition of the sky or human skin. Fine-tuned high-precision multiprocess noise reduction effectively suppresses distracting noise while preserving fine image details. The result is natural textures and precise details even in medium to high sensitivity shots.
In the new High Resolution mode, Pixel Shift can be used to create photos with a resolution of 80 megapixels (10,368 x 7,776). To do this, the camera combines eight successive images with minimal sensor shift to create a higher-resolution photo. This can be saved directly in the camera not only in JPEG, but also in RAW format. The new high-resolution photo mode is ideal for static objects and landscape shots from a tripod, for example.
2. Dual Image Stabilization by Camera and Lens
To enable stable freehand shooting with even longer exposure times, Panasonic has further perfected the LUMIX G9's Body I.S. (Body Image Stabilizer). A newly developed algorithm captures motion information not only from a gyro sensor, but also from the image sensor and an accelerometer. This enables more accurate detection of camera shake and its compensation. In particular, movements with a characteristically low frequency are suppressed even more effectively.
By combining B.I.S. (Body Image Stabilizer, 5-axis) and O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer, 2-axis), the LUMIX G9's 5-axis Dual I.S. compensates for stronger movements than conventional systems and allows up to 6.5 EV stops slower shutter speeds*1 when shooting freehand. Thanks to its compact, lightweight design, the LUMIX G9 offers maximum portability. Combined with highly effective image stabilization, this allows the camera to capture shots that were previously impossible, such as with an 800mm (35mm KB) super telephoto lens.
Dual I.S. works for both still and movie shooting, including 4K video. In-camera image stabilization also compensates for camera movement on Lenses without O.I.S. (e.g. cine lenses).

3. Fastest Autofocus with Reliable Subject Tracking
Depth From Defocus (DFD) technology*1 calculates the distance to the subject by evaluating two images with different defocus while retrieving the optical characteristics of the current Lens. Panasonic has further developed the interaction of contrast AF and DFD technology for the LUMIX G9 with accelerated sensor readout at 480 fps, giving the LUMIX G9 an AF response time of only about 0.04 s*2.
Thanks to the strong processing power of the Venus Engine, the LUMIX G9 masters "Deep Learning" technology that can recognize not only faces and eyes, but also a human form.
For more precise focusing, Panasonic has expanded the number of AF points in the LUMIX G9 from 49 to 225. Users can form a group of several of the 225 focus points and resize or move them as desired depending on the subject. Face/eye detection, tracking AF, 1-area AF and point AF are available as before.
Focusing options can be conveniently controlled by thumb using the built-in joystick without taking your eyes off the subject, even when shooting with an electronic viewfinder. The LUMIX G9 is equipped with custom AF settings that let you adjust AF sensitivity, AF area switching sensitivity, and the degree of focus compensation for moving subjects. In addition, four different presets can be recalled for typical situations.
*¹ Contrast AF with DFD technology works with Panasonic Micro-FourThirds Lenses.
*² In 1-field AF, with H-ES12060 in wide-angle position (CIPA), EVF at 120 fps.
4. Professional continuous shooting for dynamic action shots
The LUMIX G9 is capable of shooting super-fast bursts. It can record a class-leading 20 fps (AFC)*2 or alternatively 60 fps (AFS) at full 20.3-megapixel resolution. Equipped with an electronic LVF (Live View Finder) with no blackout between photos, it is ideally suited for shooting fast-moving subjects. Thanks to high tracking performance, the LUMIX G9's autofocus never loses focus on the target.
The LUMIX G9's 6K/4K photo functions offer more options for continuous shooting. 6K Photo*2 lets you capture magical moments at 30 fps. Then, the perfect moment can be extracted from the 6K continuous shooting file at a resolution of approximately 18 megapixels (in 4:3 or 3:2 format) and saved as a single photo. The improved 4K photo function enables high-speed shooting at 60 fps at a resolution of approx. 8 megapixels.
The new high-sensitivity MOS sensor largely suppresses the rolling shutter effect that is common when shooting with an electronic shutter. The Venus Engine image processor also allows images to be refined via "Post Recording Refinement" to correct distortion or reduce noise when playing back or cropping images from the 6K burst file / 4K burst file. This is done by matching the signal information between successive frames. This significantly improves the image quality of 6K/4K photo shoots with fast shutter speed and high sensitivity or shots with panning.

*² 6K Photo is a high-speed continuous shooting function that extracts single frames from 4:3 or 3:2 videos with approximately 18 megapixels of resolution (approximately 6000 x 3000 pixels).
5. Perfect overview - OLED viewfinder, shoulder-mounted display and swivel monitor
The LUMIX G9's electronic viewfinder offers best-in-class magnification of approx. 1.66x / 0.83x (35mm KB). Depending on the shooting situation, the magnification can also be set to 0.7x, 0.77x and 0.83x by simply pressing a button on the viewfinder. The sharp, high-speed OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) display offers a resolution of 3.68 million pixels and maps 100 percent of the field of view. The use of OLEDs for the LVF provides a smooth 120 fps display and fast response with a minimum delay of less than 0.005s. The 10,000:1 contrast provides excellent recognition. There are no blackouts in the image even during high-speed continuous shooting. With an eye relief of about 21mm, the LVF also provides a comfortable overview even for those who wear glasses.
The LUMIX G9 is equipped with a night mode that reduces the brightness of the displays. This allows the user to observe the subject in a relaxed manner even after viewing the monitor for a long time in dark situations. Another new feature is the flexible magnification of the autofocus range (3-10x) of the LUMIX G9. This magnifies distant, small-image objects for better control of the focus in the crop.
The large status display on top of the LUMIX G9's body always gives the photographer a quick overview of the camera settings. It has an integrated exposure and eases the transition for DSLR newcomers.
The rotatable and tiltable 7.5cm touchscreen LCD monitor in 3:2 format with a resolution of 1,040K dots shows a field of view of approx. 100 percent. In addition to the usual RGB (red/green/blue) pixels, white pixels are also used to improve recognizability in bright environments. The LCD monitor can be tilted up and down approximately 270° to facilitate shooting from higher or lower perspectives. Night mode can also be used for the monitor display.
6. Robust and ergonomic body design
An Fn lever on the front of the camera allows you to quickly change shooting preferences once frequently used settings have been saved. The G9's thumb-placed joystick allows intuitive AF-area control without taking your eye off the viewfinder. The knobs on the grip and the Fn buttons are also appropriately positioned for quasi-blind operation.
To provide the stability needed under tougher operating conditions, the structure of the G9's body consists primarily of a front and rear magnesium alloy frame. The rugged construction with seals for all joints, wheels and buttons protect the LUMIX G9 from splashing water and dust. In addition, the G9 is freeze-proof down to -10 degrees.
The LUMIX G9 is equipped with a dual SD memory card slot for fast UHS-II SD memory cards. There are several memory options to choose from. The second memory card can serve as a reserve when the SD memory card in the first slot is full. Alternatively, the image data can be stored on both cards in parallel. In addition, images can be stored on different cards depending on the file type - RAW, JPEG, 6K photo / 4K photo or 4K video data. For example, only photos can be stored on the SD memory card in slot 1 and videos in slot 2. In addition, both slots are equipped with indicator LEDs so that the user can see which SD memory card is currently active and which can be ejected.
The LUMIX G9 not only allows the battery to be charged via USB on the go, but can also be powered via USB during operation. This means that longer photo sessions in the studio, for example, are no problem.
7. Bluetooth 4.2 and Wi-Fi 5GHz / 2.4GHz
The LUMIX G9 is equipped with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi® for more flexible shooting and uncomplicated instant image sharing. Once the camera is connected to a smartphone or tablet with the Panasonic Image App for iOS / Android installed, users can shoot, browse and share images remotely. Bluetooth 4.2 (BLE: Bluetooth Low Energy) compatibility enables constant connection to a smartphone / tablet with minimal power consumption. This allows the camera to be activated via a mobile device or photos to be automatically GPS geotagged. The settings of a LUMIX G9 can be wirelessly copied and transferred to other G9 cameras.
5GHz (IEEE802.11ac) is available for WiFi communication in addition to the conventional 2.4GHz (IEEE802.11b/g/n). This enables a secure and stable connection not only with a smartphone/tablet, but also with other devices on site for smooth remote control. In addition, image data can be transferred faster when using the 5GHz band*.
